Trash to Treasure

I absolutely love the endorphin rush I get from finding something no one wanted and transforming it into my own little gem!

This time the credit goes to my daughter. Awhile back we had one of those trash day pickups the city sponsors and everyone puts their trash to the curb for pickup...well my daughter must really pay close attention to me. On this day she came running in to me extremely excited to announce that the neighbor had put out a mirror and she was sure it was exactly what I have been wanting. To say I completely ignored her would be close, I think I said something to the tune of "I will look in a little bit". If you knew my daughter you would know she has a mind of her own and decided that would simple not do...So she retrieved the mirror herself and ran it in to me.

OMG!! I jumped up and down with her! She finally got the response she was looking for. I went outside to see if there was any more treasure to discover in my neighbors pile, only to see two trucks pull up taking the rest of the pile. And it hit me if she had not taken over.......

And here is what we decided to do with our fabulous find...

 

First we took it apart

Gave it 2 coats of gloss white

Turned the mirror over and spayed the back with chalkboard paint

Let dry

We recently took the family on vacation in beautiful lake Tahoe. We stayed in a cute little cottage just off the water. Besides all the great outdoor activities we planned for the kids my husband and I enjoyed taking long walks to admire drool over  some of the many vacation homes in the area. Which started us thinking of next years vacation spot.....And I found this rental today and thought you might like to see what $135,000 can get you in the HAMPTONS.

If you were lucky enough to see the movie GREY GARDENS (aired in 2009 on HBO) you will recognize this house.

Drew Barrymore starred with Jessica Lange in this film based on the life stories of the eccentric aunt and first cousin of Jackie Onassis (both named Edith Bouvier Beale aka "Big and Little Edie") raised as Park Avenue débutantes but who withdrew from New York society, taking shelter at their Long Island summer home, "Grey Gardens." As their wealth and contact with the outside world dwindled, so did their grasp on reality. 

 The house was called Grey Gardens because of the color of the dunes, the cement garden walls, and the sea mist.

In the fall of 1971 and throughout 1972, their house was flea-infested, inhabited by innumerable cats and raccoons, lacked running water, and was full of garbage and decay. Their living conditions were exposed as the result of an article in the National Enquirer and a cover story in New York Magazine after a series of inspections (which the Beales called "raids") by the Suffolk County Health Department. With the Beale women facing eviction and the razing of their home, in the summer of 1972 Jacqueline Onassis and her sister Lee Radziwill provided the necessary funds to stabilize and repair the dilapidated house so that it would meet Village codes.

    
 Grey Gardens, 1915.  The house before the solarium was built and the famous upstairs balcony was not enclosed.  Also, the landscaping hadn’t been installed yet.  The original carriage house can be seen behind the house.  The carriage house was sold, enlarged, and still stands today.

The Atlantic is very close.  Here you can see into the walled garden and the little thatched house. Tennis courts are right behind the pool, hidden by bushes.

Last summer gorgeous potted hydrangeas surrounded the pool.  The homeowners had replaced the shingles a few years ago and now, they have finally reached the gray stage.  The turquoise trim offsets the gray perfectly.   

The landscaping around Grey Gardens is full of hydrangeas.  Hydrangeas have been on the property since Big Edie’s days.
